Day 2
October 5, 2010- AM
Today, I went on a school visit to attend the UP-USEP Information Technology Symposium 2010 at the University of the Philippines. This seminar talked a lot of essential topics that were relevant to our career in IT. The First Speaker was Prof. Lemuel Rodolfo Brana former president of the oldest and largest IT association in the Philippines. He also welcomed us.
The next speaker, Mr. Lee talked about visualization; it was all about representing data to an understandable way so that we can easily visualize the flow of the data.
Next speaker was Ms. Rose Ann Sale a MS Computer Science Student in UP Diliman. Her topic was all about a Successful Thesis. She told us how to make a wonderful thesis.
After that, it was Len Degracia’s turn to present. She talked about on animation, 3d modeling. She also gave some tips to us in order to be like her. She said that in the animation industry, grades were not important, what matters the most were one’s ability, skills and creativeness. She also encouraged us to do the things that we love and also to pursue our dreams.
The next speaker was Professor Carlos Bott, he talked about Mobile Application Game Development. He was so good at his work and his field. He talked about how to connect and use scripts to your program and some basic tips and requirements. This field should require not only skills but also brain and knowledge. He insisted that we need first to know the basics of programming.
The last speaker for the day was Mr. Ferdinand Pitagan. His topic was Empowering the Nation Through Educational Technology.
After the Seminar and lunch break, we headed for the UP technohub wherein we visited Sea Change and IBM.
In Sea Change, we knew that their business was all about a unique cable program wherein their customer can pause the currently played movie as well as resume the movie into their computer. Their market was in US and they had planned to introduce their technology here in the Philippines.
After a short tour in Sea Change, we headed to IBM, just close to Sea Change. Their representative gave some infos and stuffs to us to kill some time. He showed us their servers that were behind a glass wall. Then after a couple of minutes, he led us to the room wherein Ms. Iris Chu was waiting for us. She was in charge for giving information that regards to IBM and stuffs.
Then after the tour to UP’s Technohub, we returned to UP campus to tour their laboratories and to show their students' works.
What I Learned?
This day, I learned a lot of great stuffs from the symposium in UP Diliman. First, I learned on how to make a successful thesis thanks to Ms. Rose Ann Sale. Second, I learned that to be a successful animator, grades were not needed, it needed skills and talent. Third, Mr. Bott taught us to learn the basics of programming. Fourth, I learned from Mr. Lee the importance of visualizing the data.
In visiting Sea Change, I learned that their technology was unique. And if implemented here in the Philippines, it will be a success.
In IBM, I learned that we can use their servers for free. I learned also that they sold their hardware division to Lenovo, by doing that, they focused on the software side.
And back to UP labs, I learned that their students are hardworking and also very knowledgeable in their chosen fields. They also have the best equipments and their laboratories were conducive to learning.
What I liked?
I liked everything that happened this day. I liked the symposium for giving us the opportunity to enhance our learning and to expose us from different technologies available. I liked also Sea Change for giving us the chance to visit their unique company same as well to IBM. I liked the most was UP’s labs, because their labs were modern, compared to the Jurassic of Usep’s their computer units were all Mac’s. They also had PS3 and XBOX 360 that caught my attention.
What I didn’t like?
Well, surprisingly there’s nothing that I didn’t like this day.
